Steve St. Clair has lived in Lockwood since 1989. He was married for forty years. They never had children but he and his late wife loved dogs and considered their four-legged friends their children.
Steve enjoyed a variety of positions while he was working, such as construction, servicing of tanks and fire-suppression trucks and even drove a truck for fire crews across the country. He recalls spending 79 days on the road; his longest trip ever. At one point, he drove a water truck for Granite construction. His wife worked in a sheet metal shop for most of her working years.
He’s been receiving nutritious home-delivered meals from Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley since 2013. At that time, he had experienced a heart-attack and severe pneumonia. Sadly, his beloved wife died the day he was supposed to come home from the hospital.
Around the same time, he started having difficulty with his vision which made it difficult for him to drive. While receiving our meals, he’s lost fifty pounds, has become more health conscious and reduced his salt intake.
He still has a dog and receives dog food from us in addition to the nutritious frozen meals we deliver to him weekly. With the SPCA of Monterey County, we also offer PetMeals. PetMeals provides pet food to our clients who can’t leave their homes to buy food for their valued pets. The SPCA raises funds to support the program, and their volunteers bag, label and deliver pet food to Meals on Wheels. Our volunteers then deliver the PetMeals along with their regularly scheduled food deliveries.
Steve thinks the staff and volunteers who deliver to him are “excellent” and he is thankful for our program.
