Volunteer(s) of the Quarter – Sept. 2018

Congratulations to a husband and wife team, Pat & Gary Wrightman, our Volunteer(s) of the Quarter for September 2018!

More than a year ago, Pat was prompted to check in to volunteering for MOWSV when she read that Trump wanted to get rid of the Meals on Wheels programs. Pat started as a volunteer in June 2017 and, soon after, encouraged her husband to come along with her. “I saw Pat enjoying her time at Meals on Wheels, so I decided to volunteer too,’” says Gary, Pat’s husband.

Both Pat and Gary enjoy meeting the new clients and being able to help people. “This was the same reasoning that started Gary’s career in law enforcement,” said Pat. Gary was a Deputy Sherriff for Monterey County for 25 years before retiring a few years ago. Previous to his service in law enforcement, he served 5 years with Kern County Fire and 10 years as a small business owner.

Pat was able to retire after 10 years as a Classified employee with the Salinas Unified School District. Previous to that, she worked 15 years in Monterey County at Natividad Hospital in the Office of Emergency Services.

In both of their long careers, there was a common thread; helping others. Both Pat and Gary emphasized how much it means to them to be able to help others. At Meals on Wheels they have the ability to assess the well-being of every senior they deliver meals to.  Volunteering has allowed them to form connections with everybody on their routes. They look forward to seeing the clients each week.

In their free time, aside from their volunteer activities, Pat and Gary enjoy gardening and spoiling their dogs and cats. They have shared some of the bounty from their lemon tree with staff and volunteers at MOWSV! Also, Gary works as the Night Manager/Chief of Security at Montage Wellness Center in Salinas. He enjoys sharing all the benefits of the Wellness Center with those who are interested to learn.

Pat and Gary have been residents of Salinas since 1985.  They have a son who lives in Salinas with their two grandchildren, ages 5 and 11.

Thank you, Pat and Gary, for being such reliable and hard-working volunteers. We appreciate all you do for Meals on Wheels. Congratulations on being our Volunteers of the Quarter!

Volunteer(s) of the Quarter – Jan. 2018

Congratulations to NCI Affiliates, Inc. our Volunteer(s) of the Quarter!

We asked NCI Affiliates, Inc. a little bit about the organization and here is their reply, “We at NCI Affiliates, Inc. are dedicated in providing services that encourage and support individuals with disabilities so that they may achieve their personal and professional goals.  One way NCI Affiliates helps to achieve these goals is to have our clients begin in our day programs and then volunteer at organizations throughout the city. Through volunteering, our clients gain confidence, self-esteem, responsibility, trustworthiness and socialization skills.”

They continued by adding, “We chose Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley as the organization our clients would volunteer. MOWSV allows our clients an opportunity to help others in the community, learn vocational skills and have social interactions with others. We appreciate all the support we have received from Meals on Wheels.”

The staff at Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley would like to thank NCI Affiliates for their reliability and dedication to our meal delivery program. We look forward to continuing our partnership!

Volunteer of the Quarter – OCT. 2017

Congratulations to Marione Browning our Volunteer of the Quarter! Marione started volunteering for MOWSV more than 25 years ago because she wanted to do something to help people. “By delivering meals to seniors, it helps them stay in their homes and that is very satisfying,’” says Marione.

Marione stays busy with her MOWSV volunteering and also has volunteered with the Steinbeck Center and Steinbeck House working on various committees.

Aside from her volunteer activities, Marione’s work career has included experience in banking, government, newspaper advertising and she was a teacher at Natividad Elementary School for 10 years.

Marione has been a resident of Salinas for 60 years.  She has two daughters, one lives in Morgan Hill and the other in Palmdale and Marione is a proud grandma to 4 grandchildren.

In her free time, Marione enjoys going to the theater, playing bridge and traveling.

Thank you Marione, for being a such wonderful volunteer and congratulations on being our Volunteer of the Quarter!

Volunteer of the Quarter – APR. 2017

Maria Kooroshfar began volunteering for Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley (MOWSV) in October of 2008. Her father had passed away earlier that year and she wanted to do something to give back in her Dad’s memory. She had a friend who suggested she volunteer with Meals on Wheels, so she did! Maria feels that the most rewarding aspect of volunteering for MOWSV is that she has been a constant presence in the same clients’ lives for years. Maria can see in their faces how happy they are to see her. She is so grateful that she can make them happy and chat with them for awhile.

Maria believes that Meals on Wheels is a great service to the community. “Being out there with the elderly who need to see other people is very rewarding,” says Maria. She is glad to be a little bit of joy in her clients day.

Maria was born and raised in Santa Barbara by her mom and dad with 5 siblings. She has been on the Central Coast for 25 years, first living in Salinas and then Monterey.  She and her husband have raised 2 children here, Nina who works for Facebook and Bijan who attends college at UC Davis.

As a Christian, Maria feels like she should do something for other people. The clients she delivers to started out as strangers but they have become her friends. Maria shared a cute story of a client who always wanted a kiss from her. Finally, she agreed to let him kiss her hand! Every week he now gives her a kiss on the hand.

Thank you Maria, for being a such wonderful volunteer and congratulations on being our Volunteer of the Quarter!
