Volunteer Policy

Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley does not accept court referrals.

All individuals who volunteer to help deliver meals to Meals on Wheels’ clients must:

  • Complete and sign a Volunteer Application and submit it to the Program Coordinator before they begin to volunteer. An active volunteer must complete and sign the Volunteer Application before he/she can continue to volunteer.
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license and provide a copy of it to the Program Coordinator before they can serve as a volunteer driver. They must provide a copy of their California driver’s license to the Program Coordinator when it is renewed.
  • Maintain personal automobile insurance with at least $50,000 single limit liability or the equivalent ($50,000 bodily injury for each person, $100,000 bodily injury for each accident, and $50,000 property damage for each accident) and provide a copy of proof of insurance to the Program Coordinator before they can serve as a volunteer driver. They must provide a copy of proof of insurance to the Program Coordinator when it is renewed or changed.
  • Read the Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley (MOWSV) Volunteer Handbook and sign a form stating that they accept the responsibilities and agree to abide by the policies and practices as described in the Volunteer Handbook.
  • Notify MOWSV in the event their driver’s license is suspended or revoked and/or their automobile insurance is cancelled.
  • Report for their volunteer assignment in a condition which allows them to perform their duties in a safe and competent manner. Volunteers shall not be under the influence of any substance, including alcohol, which would impair their ability to perform their duties.
  • Not possess, use, dispense, distribute, or manufacture any controlled substance (except prescribed for that person by a physician or other authorized prescriber) in the buildings, grounds, or vehicles owned or leased by Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley.

A file shall be kept for each volunteer who helps deliver meals. Their Volunteer Application, copies of their driver’s license and current proof of insurance, and the signed Volunteer Handbook Acceptance form is to be kept in their file.

The only exception to this policy is for minor children when they accompany a relative or other responsible adult.
